Yangjiang City

【General Introduction】

Situated along the costal area of southwest Guangdong, Yangjiang faces South China Sea in the south and is adjacent to Yunfu, Jiangmen and Maoming. It covers a land area of 7813 square kilometers and a water area of 10230 square kilometers. Its costal line stretches 341.5 kilometers with 40 islands and with a population of 2.677 million. Yangjiang exercises jurisdiction over 2 counties, 4 districts and is mandated to govern Yangchun City.

【History】

Yangjiang was subject to the administration of Nanhai County in the Qin Dynasty and became a separate county in the Sui Dynasty. After 1949, Yangjiang and Yangchun were included in Jiangmen Central Guangdong Administrative Region. In 1988, Yangjiang officially became a municipality.

【Economy】

Yangjiang is a developing costal city focusing on 5 strategic fields: industry, tourism, agriculture, trade and education. Private economy has experienced rapid development. 【General Introduction】

Located in the southernmost part of Chinese mainland, southwest Guangdong, Zhangjiang City is a connecting point for Guangdong province, Guangxi province and Hainan province. It faces South China Sea in the east and Hainan province across the Qiongzhou Strait, adjacent to Beibu Bay in the west, and borders Guangxi province in the northwest, with an area of 12417 square kilometers and a population of 7.1 million. It exercises jurisdiction over 3 cities, 2 counties and 4 districts.

【History】

Zhanjiang was successively subject to the administration of Hepu County in the Han Dynasty, Leizhou County in the Tang Dynasty, and Leizhou Prefecture in the Ming and Qing Dynasty. It was invaded by France in the Qing Dynasty and became a colony, during which it was named Guangzhou Bay. It officially became a city in the 1940s. It was upgraded to be a municipality in 1983.

【Economy】

Zhanjiang enjoys rich oceanic resources and abundant petrol oil reserve. It has achieved robust economic development. Petrochemical industry, offshore oil exploration, processing of agricultural and marine products, electricity, paper making, feedstuff, textile, electric appliances and machinery have become its 8 pillar industries. It's the production base for Southern Petroleum Co. Ltd., agricultural and marine product processing, high-quality paper making and small household appliances manufacturing. Zhanjiang is one of the 4 major sugarcane yielding centers in China, with its sugar output reaching 1.2 million tons in 2006. In addition, Zhanjiang grows amount of eucalypt, sisal and mangrove in China. 21 manufacturing bases for 5 categories of agricultural products have been built here.

【Communications】

As one of the first costal cities opened to the outside world, Zhanjiang is the pivot port of China's marine transprtation. The large number of harbors and ports has made Zhanjiang a port city with Zhanjiang Port being the core. Railways on the land include Lizhan route, Sanmao route, Zhanhai route, which are connected to the national railway network. National Highway No. 207, No.325, Guangzhan Expressway and Yuzhan Expressway run through its territory. Its airport, designed to accommodate large airplanes, has opened over 40 flight routes.

【General Introduction】

Located in southwest Guangdong, Maoming is adjacent to the South China Sea in the south and borders on southwest China in the north. It became a city in 1959 and was upgraded to be a municipality in 1983. It exercises jurisdiction over 1 county, 2 districts and is mandated to govern 3 county-level cities. It covers a land area of 11,459 square kilometers with a population of 6.8 million.

【History】

Inhabitants were found to live here in late Neolithic Period which dates back 4500 years ago. The people were called Baiyue Tribe in the Xia and Shang Dynasties. Thanks to thousands of years' history, Maoming has developed its profound culture with prominent local feature. Maoming is home to 550,000 overseas Chinese living in 52 countries and regions, 300,000 of them are now residing in Malaysia.

【Economy】

Maoming is one of the largest petrochemical production centers in China and an important energy resources base, with an annual production capacity of 13.5 million tons of oil and 1 million tons of ethylene. Thanks to the modernization of agricultural industry, Maoming has for many years ranked top in Guangdong in terms of fishery, grain, fruit and meat outputs and gross agricultural output as well. As the largest fruit yielding city in China, its lychee output accounts for 1/4 of the nation's total and 1/5 of the world's total.

Maoming connects Guangdong with Guangxi, Hainan, Sichuan, Yunnan and Guizhou in southwest China. Guangzhan Expressway and National Highway No. 325 and No.207

intersect the city. It's only 3-hour ride to Guangzhou. Sanmao railway and Hemao railway connect to Lizhan, Nankun, Zhiliu, Jingguang, Jingjiu, Guangmeishan railroads. The Luozhan railway which will pass Gaozhou and Xinyi is under construction. Maoming Port is a Category-1 Port approved by the State Council.

Zhapo Fishery

Hailing Island

Zhanjiang Mangrove Natural Reserve

The 19,000-hectare state-level natural reserve is the largest existing reserve for

mangroves in China. Due to the tropical marine climate, a large area of mangroves grows on the beaches on the Leizhou Peninsula. There are 12 families, 16 genus and 17 species of mangrove plants and quite a few waterfowl and wetland animals such as cranes, storks and herons.

Xinyi Zhonglin Rosin Company Limited

Special Agriculture in Maoming

News Focus

Salvage project of the Nanhai No.1 Ancient Ship

In 1987 during a mission when Guangzhou Salvage Bureau and a British salvage company were researching for a shipwreck of East India Company, 200 pieces of porcelain were accidentally discovered from a shipwreck confirmed to have sunk in the Song Dynasty. Archeologists assumed this ancient ship was related to the Marine Silk Road, and named

the ship as Nanhai No. 1. In 2000. The Underwater Archaeology Center under the National Museum of China, in corporation with Guangdong Cultural Relics Archeological Research Institute organized a 12-member professional team to locate the shipwreck.

In 2002, the team carried out the second underwater research, and dredged up over 4000 pieces of cultural relics. In 2004, Guangdong Development and Reform Commission decided to allocate fund to build a Marine Silk Road Museum on the beach of Yangjiang's Hailing Island and the construction started soon afterward. On January 16, 2007, the archaeology team carried out the last underwater inspection before the overall salvage of the shipwreck. May 17th, 2007 marked the official start of the overall salvage.

Zhanjiang Port

Zhanjiang Port is the only national-level hub in western Guangdong and the Beibu Bay Ring area, and is the largest natural deep-water port. It has over 20 10,000-ton and 50,000-ton berths, China's first 300,000-ton ashore oil terminal and 200,000-ton iron ore terminal which is the 3rd largest in China and the largest in South China.

Petroleum City in South China

Upon the completion of the oil transmission pipelines to southwest China and Pearl River Delta, Maoming will be able to further strengthen its status as a key petrochemical city in China.

In 2006, the crude oil refined by SINOPEC Maoming exceeded 140 million tons for the first time, up 10.44% year-by-year, bringing the total industrial output to 58.256 billion yuan.
